What Is Structured Sober Living?

Going straight back to old surroundings is where a lot of recovery comes undone. Structured sober living gives a steady, substance-free place to keep growing.

A steady, substance-free place to practice real life sober

When someone finishes detox or residential treatment, they are often stronger than they have been in years, and also more fragile than they look. The clinical work has started, but the habits, routines, and relationships of daily life are still being rebuilt. Sending a person right back into the same environment that fed the addiction asks a lot of new, untested recovery. Structured sober living exists to fill that gap.

A sober living home is a safe, substance-free place to live alongside other people who are committed to recovery. It is not treatment, and it is not a hospital. It is a real home with real expectations, where your loved one can practice sober life with support close by while gradually taking back independence.

What makes it structured

The word structured matters. A good sober living home is not just a roof over someone's head. It holds people to a set of shared commitments that keep the house safe and keep recovery moving forward:

  • A clear, substance-free environment with accountability
  • Regular drug and alcohol testing
  • Expectations around work, school, or volunteering
  • Participation in recovery meetings or ongoing treatment
  • Shared house responsibilities and respect for housemates

Where it fits in recovery

Sober living can support a connected recovery plan without being a clinical level of care. Many people step down from residential treatment into outpatient care while separately living in a sober home, so they receive clinical support during the day and return to a stable, accountable place at night. That overlap can support the transition while clinical care and housing remain separate services. By the Sea Recovery, operated by Present Moments Recovery Group, provides separate men-only Structured Sober Living in San Marcos. BTS housing is not PMR clinical treatment.

The beauty of our Continuum of Care model is a consistent treatment team from the beginning of the journey until the client is ready to fly solo. Clients are able to establish trust with their primary counselor, while the team supports them from the first day of care through their transition into the next appropriate stage of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Is sober living the same as treatment?

No. Treatment is clinical care, like detox, residential, or outpatient therapy. Sober living is supportive, substance-free housing that helps protect recovery while someone is in or just out of treatment. Many people live in a sober home while still attending outpatient care, so the two work together.

Who is a good fit for sober living?

Sober living tends to help people who have started recovery and want stable, accountable housing as they rebuild work, routines, and relationships. It is especially valuable for anyone whose home environment would make staying sober harder. We can help you think through whether it fits your loved one's situation.

How is By the Sea Recovery connected to Present Moments Recovery?

By the Sea Recovery is operated by Present Moments Recovery Group and provides separate men-only Structured Sober Living in San Marcos. BTS housing is not PMR clinical treatment. You can learn more on its dedicated page or call us to talk through whether separately arranged housing may fit your recovery plan.

How is a structured sober living home different from just moving out on your own?

A structured home adds accountability that living alone cannot. There is regular drug and alcohol testing, expectations around work or school, participation in recovery meetings, and shared responsibilities with housemates who are committed to the same goal. That structure is what protects early recovery when it is still new and untested.

Can someone start sober living without going through residential first?

Often yes. While many people step down into sober living from detox or residential, others move in while attending outpatient care or after a shorter program. What matters is having a stable, substance-free place to keep growing. We can help you figure out where sober living fits in your loved one's situation.
