DUI Assessments for Out-of-State Requirements

Present Moments Recovery provides face-to-face DUI and addiction assessments for people who have received a DUI charge or conviction and need an evaluation for an out-of-state court, DMV, licensing authority, or other requesting agency.

Many of the people we assist live in San Diego County but received their DUI charge or conviction in another state. Depending on that state's requirements, an assessment completed by an appropriately credentialed addiction counselor or therapist may be accepted as part of a driver's-license reinstatement, court, or administrative process.

Requirements vary by jurisdiction. Before scheduling, we review the paperwork provided by the requesting state, court, DMV, or agency to determine what is required and whether Present Moments Recovery can complete the assessment.

Who This Service Is For

This service may be appropriate for someone who:

  • lives in San Diego County or is able to attend an in-person appointment here;
  • received a DUI charge or conviction in another state;
  • has been instructed by an out-of-state DMV, court, or agency to obtain an alcohol, drug, or substance-use assessment;
  • needs documentation as part of a driver's-license reinstatement or other administrative requirement;
  • has paperwork identifying the type of evaluation or professional credentials required.

You do not need to enter treatment at Present Moments Recovery in order to schedule an assessment.

The assessment is a stand-alone service.

How the DUI Assessment Process Works

  1. 1. Contact Present Moments Recovery

    Call our office or submit the website contact form.

    Mark typically helps coordinate the initial scheduling and reviews what the requesting agency is asking for.

  2. 2. Send or Bring Your Paperwork

    Please provide the documentation you received from the requesting:

    • DMV;
    • court;
    • state agency;
    • attorney;
    • probation or legal representative; or
    • other authority.

    This paperwork is important because requirements are different from state to state.

    We do not assume that one state's assessment requirements apply to another.

  3. 3. Attend the Assessment in Person

    DUI and addiction assessments are completed face-to-face.

    They are not offered remotely.

    A typical assessment takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

  4. 4. Credentialed Review

    The assessment is performed by a certified addiction counselor.

    When the requesting jurisdiction requires particular professional credentials, the completed documentation is reviewed and signed by an appropriately credentialed counselor or therapist who meets the applicable requirement.

    We review those requirements before confirming that PMR can complete the requested assessment.

  5. 5. Documentation Is Prepared

    After the assessment, PMR prepares the required documentation based on:

    • the assessment;
    • the client's supplied paperwork;
    • the requirements identified by the requesting authority; and
    • the forms or instructions supplied by that jurisdiction.

    Documentation is typically completed within 2–3 business days.

  6. 6. Documentation Is Submitted

    When permitted by the requesting authority's instructions, PMR sends the completed documentation directly to the appropriate court, DMV, state agency, or other requesting entity.

    A copy is also provided to the client.

Important: This Is Not a California DUI Education Program

Present Moments Recovery is a licensed substance-use-disorder treatment provider, but PMR is not a California-licensed DUI program and does not provide California's mandated first-offender, multiple-offender, or DUI education programs.

California DHCS licenses DUI programs operating within California. DHCS states that California DUI programs must be state licensed and provides separate requirements for first- and multiple-offender services.

Visitors who specifically need a California-licensed DUI program should use the official California resources below rather than scheduling PMR's out-of-state assessment service.

DHCS maintains the statewide directory of licensed California DUI providers and performs compliance monitoring for those programs.

What Is the Difference?

PMR DUI/Addiction Assessment:

  • Individual assessment
  • Often used for an out-of-state requirement
  • Approximately 60–90 minutes
  • Conducted face-to-face
  • Does not require enrollment in PMR treatment
  • PMR reviews the requesting jurisdiction's paperwork

California DUI Program:

  • State-regulated DUI education/treatment program
  • Used to satisfy California DUI-program requirements
  • Program length depends on the applicable California requirement
  • Delivered by a DHCS-licensed DUI program
  • Separate California DUI-program enrollment
  • Program requirements established under California's DUI system

Do I Have to Enter Treatment at PMR?

No.

A person may schedule a DUI/addiction assessment without enrolling in detox, residential treatment, PHP, IOP, outpatient treatment, or any other Present Moments Recovery service.

How Much Does a DUI Assessment Cost?

Assessment pricing is provided privately when you contact our office.

Payment is due at the time of the assessment.

Because requirements can vary by state and requesting authority, we first review what you have been asked to complete before confirming the appointment.

What Should I Bring?

Please bring:

  • a government-issued photo ID;
  • the DUI assessment paperwork supplied by the requesting authority;
  • DMV, court, or agency instructions;
  • relevant case or reference numbers;
  • contact information for the agency receiving the assessment;
  • any forms that must be completed or signed;
  • any other documents specifically requested by that jurisdiction.

Providing complete paperwork before or at the appointment helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Most appointments take approximately 60–90 minutes.
