Like alcohol, benzodiazepines calm an overactive nervous system. When they are removed suddenly, the nervous system can swing the other way, which can bring on severe anxiety, agitation, insomnia, and in serious cases seizures. Because of that risk, benzo detox is usually done gradually, with medication and monitoring, rather than all at once.
How benzo detox works at PMR
Detox begins with a clinical assessment so we understand the full picture before anything else. Because benzodiazepine withdrawal is so individual, our team reviews the details that shape a safe plan:
- Medication history and which benzodiazepine is involved
- Dosage and how long it has been used
- Previous withdrawal experiences
- Mental health concerns
- Physical health factors
- Support available outside treatment
From there, our Medical Director sets the orders that guide a gradual, monitored stabilization. The goal is to ease the body off the medication safely rather than force it to crash.
“Medication-Assisted Treatment may be one part of care when clinically appropriate. At Present Moments Recovery, MAT is not a stand-alone solution or the entire treatment model. It is used as part of a broader clinical program that may include medication evaluation, medication management, counseling, treatment planning, relapse prevention, family support, and continuing care. PMR may support physician-prescribed medications such as buprenorphine/Suboxone when appropriate but does not provide methadone treatment on site.”
Once withdrawal stabilizes, the next stage focuses on the reasons the medication became a problem in the first place. Detox at PMR sits inside a connected plan, so clients move into residential treatment, outpatient care, medication-assisted treatment when appropriate, or structured sober living without starting over.
